When in my dimension Settings I have Unit settings to Ft/In, I would like to have a setting that would cause dimensions less than 1 foot to show the dimension in inches only. Presently, a dimension of 11" reads as 0' 11". This seems cluttered to me, and I always end up going in and changing these units to Inch instead of Ft/In.

I requested this recently, but for 24" or less. Perhaps a user settable setting

That would be a very nice feature.
I would set it for dimensions < 1' or, ideally, a toggle similar to AW so the UNit could be switched on the fly.

Do you see this as a global setting that affects all dimensions in a drawing?

I need to try and be sure that I know what you mean by a global setting that affects all dimensions in the drawing. I think you likely mean that the drawing will dimension this way until I decide to make changes in the settings. For example, if I am drawing in model space on a floor plan that is to be printed at Ό” scale, I may have the text size of the dimensions set at 3”. Then, if I’m dimensioning detail that will be printed at 1 ½” scale, I adjust the text size to be ½” for the next while. Is this a global setting in your sense? If so, I think that a global setting is the way to go. I don’t think I will very often, if ever dimension 5 Ό” as 0’ – 5 Ό”, even with my dimension settings on Ft/In.

Sam,

Think of it this way. A global setting affects all the objects in the drawing without having to edit each one. One example of a global is Display Fill. When it is turned off, all the fills in the drawing turn off, even filled arrows.

I'm not sure what to call this setting but for now let's call it Strip Zero Feet. If set ALL dimensions in the drawing would no longer show 0'. If turned back on the 0' - 5" would reappear.

I don't think this should be a global setting.

Matt,
I like the sound of what you suggest in the second paragraph. Is that a global setting? I would have thought so.
Tom,
Are you in favor of what is suggested here?

Tom is in favor of it being a dimension setting local to the dimension entity. I think that's the safest way to implement it.

Does that mean that a procedure(UG)is required every time a feet/ inch dimension is created that is less than a foot.
We already have that ability, by going and changing the unit of said created dimension to inch units.

It would be a new DQ (Dimension setting). You could create a new dimen with Strip Zero Feet set. Very similar to Leading Zeros and Dash settings in DQ>Units/Format tab.

I see. Sounds to me as if that would do what I was requesting.
Tom was asking for a way to not just get rid of the 0’, but also the 1’. Would it have the ability to do this as well?
Thanks,
Sam

I would use the setting through DQ or AQ if that's the way it works out but I think it would be more useful to me if I could toggle 'Strip 0' (S-Zero?) on the fly, as I do AW, when I notice the clutter as I place a dimension.

Chiming in late here, but in manual drafting for building design we would never be inputting 0' for a dimension less that a foot, but the stumbling point is that at exactly one foot some things are dimensioned as 1' (ie a running plan view dimension) and others as 12" (ie 12" thick wall, as certain items as masonry units are known as 12" thick not 1'-0").

This request was posted in February of this year. I have requested it several months prior. I would not put too much hope in this feature getting into GCP.
