We're seeing this type of report more and more lately. We've have come up with some solutions that have worked for several users.

Problem:
Trying to print a D-sized drawing containing JPG images to PDF. The drawing will print but only partial or no image prints.

Solution 1:
Lower the PDF drivers resolution from 600 dpi to 300 dpi. There seems to be no noticeable difference in the quality of the output. You could also try 144 dpi.

Solution 2:
Lower the resolution of the image. In some cases the image is black and white, but it's stored in high res color. Lowering it to 256 color in most cases does not change the look of the image, but could shave megabytes off the image.

Solution 3:
Lower the size of the image. Lowering from 6000x4000 to 1200x800 would make a huge difference. You'd have to decide if the new image quality is acceptable especially when the image is scaled up by CADD.

Some things to consider.

Let us know if these tips work for you.

Guys;

Printing large graphic drawings to PDF using cutepdf may required a change in res down to 300 this has worked. I have had problems printing to PDF only on ARCH E sized drawings with 20% or more graphic detail, but knowing the trick saved me some time and worked.

Thanks MATT, JIM

Solution #1 has worked for me every time this problem occurs. I use 144 dpi.

Also, as a general note, if your output is strictly black & white, make sure to set "Black & White" in your PDF driver. It defaults to Color. It could make your PDF's smaller in size.

Hi,

I'm new to this board and came across your problem as I was browsing for something else.

I have the same problem with Adobe when trying to generate a pdf containing mixed raster and vector data in Mapinfo. Vector data plots--raster backdrop doesn't. Solution: simple, but just one more step. Install Ghostscript and Ghostview first. Then install a plotter/printer that supports postcript files (EPS or PS). Print or plot to "File" the postscript file. Ghostview will open it, but you will have to tweak the dimensions sometimes as this is not always automatic. In Ghostview you can CONVERT a file to a PDF (do not "save as" but convert). When you do, add the PDF extension because it does not do it automatically.

This should yield the pdf you want at any size you want. Installing Ghostscript and Ghostview is not transparent (needs pointers to directories, etc). And Ghostview will need a bit of reading and practice until you are comfortable with it.

Good luck.

P.S. to previous message. When converting the PS or EPS file in Ghostview (GSView), you want to use the "pdfwrite" option. In most cases 300 dpi is sufficient.
