Hi Carl et all,

I have a .dwg drawing file, zipped, from a vectorworks architect who converted to acad version 2004 .dwg to email to me.

The drawing opens without serious issues in General Cadd, version 6.1, but it is painfully slow to draw and refresh.

I think it is the complexity of random shaped landscaping details that slow things down...like a thousand arcs per shape.

Is it possible to simplify those objects in the .dwg to .gxd conversion? Is there a setting I can access?
I need to retain them in some way on the drawing but they could be represented by fewer arcs.

It's been a long time since I did an FB report but I'll try and send something.

Thanks,
Sean

I have the same problem, especially on site plans. Those thousand-plus arc objects, usually trees or bushes, are 3D objects squashed down to 2D. I usually erase them and replace with a simplified component.

I, too, have requested some sort of filter on conversion to GXD.

Note - on DWG's, I always to a DK first. Many times I explode components and do another DK. I always find lots of duplicates and junk.

Hi Sean - you might want to download V8 and see if it's any faster. We've done a lot of work on DWG since v6. V8 will load and display DWGs in demo mode. Also should probably send in the file to contact@generalcadd.com

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Sean - If you can send me the DWG I can tell you what's going on with it.
Contact@GeneralCADD.com
Thanks,
Carl

Thanks for the interest.
I've little experience with 3d objects but, from his description, I think Tom hit the nail on the head.
Thousands of curves, arcs and tiny lines in landscape details.
I haven't seen redraw speeds like this since Generic Cadd tried to model the space shuttle on an XT Turbo.
Sort of cool...but

Wasn't there a setting in the old days to convert arcs or curves to more simple shapes ?

I sent the original .dwg and my .gxd in separate emails to contact@generalcadd. Thanks Carl.

Matt, I don't have an office here and am trying to run CADD on a tired laptop. It may be part of the problem. I still need to find out if my plotter will run with a usb to parallel converter.
I'll have to wait until I get a bit more set up with hardware before upgrading software.

PS.
I filter-changed curves to a hidden layer as a partial workaround but it isn't a complete solution.
It's been a couple years since I did Cadd and I'm really rusty. ;-)

Sean,

Try saving the drawing file as a batch file, close the drawing file and then reimporting the batch file. I have found that this clears out a lot of the AutoCad junk from imported files.
