Add me to the list, GCP3. Printers were there yesterday, gone today. PDF is the only printer showing but several are installed and operable by other software. PDF is not the default printer. Changing default doesn't help. Even the print selector pull down box is gone! Reinstalled software, no difference! Running Win 7, no changes I am aware of.
HELP!

I find it hard to believe "they were there yesterday and gone today". You state you are running Win 7. Were you running Win 7 yesterday?

Please include all other details that may help us to understand completely the parameters that may affect this situation.

Exactly! There is no printer selection from the DP / U option. There is just a box with a PDF printer named. The PDF printer is not the default and changing the default does not affect the problem. Win7 was installed from the reload of the software and just a day or so earlier I was able to print to another printer. Could an update have squashed this control? I'd like to do a restore to see if that helps but there are no older points. The restore points was turned off for some reason on this system? Do you think a clean install of GenCad is a fix?
Here's a screen shot

Thank you. We are aware of that problem in Versions 3 and 4 under Win 7 and Vista. There is a change in the OS code that is responsible for it. The part I find hard to understand is why you didn't have the problem the first time you ran GCP 3 under Win 7. This is a known problem under the new OS's.

You may be able to change printers by erasing the .pra and .prb files:

I did delete the two suggested files, and they were rebuilt when the software started. Oddly, the .prb file when opened with notepad, has the Windows default printer and not the one that shows above? Where does GenCadd get the printer info?

Thanks for your efforts,
Len

I've asked Matt, out lead programmer to pop in here. Keep in mind that you are asking questions about a version that is 5 years old and no longer supported. An upgrade is recommended.

Len,

You can actually click in the printer box to launch the list of printers. See if this works. Just click your mouse on the Bull Zip Printer text. The printer button is missing because of an OS change to the print setup dialog that happened after GCP3 was released. There are probably other instabilities since the product is old and Vista/W7 did not exist at the time of GCP3's release.

Thanks Matt,
The box does not respond to clicks.

What I discovered is that the .prb file rebuilds when GCP3 is run, and it will rebuild with whatever is set as the Windows default printer. I wrote a batch file that deletes the .prb file then launches gcp3. If I reset the default printer then run the batch it works.
Yes, I've been chastised about the older version so an upgrade is in the mill.

Thanks All,
Len

PS: Maybe there was an issue with Win7 from the start but the printer selected was OK so it wasn't noticed.

Maybe something changed and the .prb file was rebuilt with a different default printer.
Life is full of maybes!

Len,

Sorry that didn't work. It's been a long time since I've been in that version.

Can you try installing a later version like V7 or V8? I'd like to see if the printers show up. If the printers show up then the problem is with GCP3, if not then it's a system wide problem.

Installing a new version will not affect GCP3, all the files are put into a new folder.

Regardless, the Printer select button is gone for good. This started happening to GCP3 when Vista came out. GCP4 fixed the problem. I think you will have to at least upgrade to GCP4.

Not sure why it just started showing up on your machine, but it's a known problem that was fixed 5 yrs ago!

Matt

Matt

I downloaded the GCP8 demo and the print box seems intact.
I'm moving forward on the upgrade path!
Thanks again,

Len
